Frequently Asked Questions

What is included with a MLH Hackcon ticket?

Unlike most professional conferences, MLH Hackcon tickets are all-inclusive. Just get yourself to NYC and we'll take care of the rest! Tickets cover two nights of housing, six meals, snacks, drinks, swag, a fun group activity, transportation to and from Manhattan, and the conference itself.

How much does MLH Hackcon cost?

MLH Hackcon tickets are heavily subsidized for students. A standard ticket costs $200 for a student, recent grad, or non-student MLH Member Event organizers and $1,000 for an industry professional. We will make discounts available for early registrations. If you cannot afford it, you may apply for a scholarship.

Will you give out Scholarships?

Scholarships are provided by MLH and GitHub. Scholarships only cover conference tickets (which includes everything above) but do not cover travel or anything additional. To apply for a scholarship, fill out this form, which includes a short video explaining why you want to go to MLH Hackcon and how much of a scholarship you need in order to attend. Please remember that we have a limited number of scholarship tickets, so only apply if this will make or break your ability to come to MLH Hackcon. We offer partial or full scholarships up to the full cost of the conference ticket. If your scholarship is approved, you will be required to provide proof of a flight or other transportation to the conference. We would recommend speaking to your University or your employer about paying for your travel and/or conference ticket as well!

We received a GitHub New Member Event Grant. How do we claim our MLH Hackcon ticket?

We will be e-mailing every Member Event that received a GitHub grant with information on how to redeem your ticket. Please note that each event will only receive one MLH Hackcon ticket courtesy of GitHub but you are welcome to purchase more for the rest of your team. If you have not received any information about your ticket, please e-mail us at [email protected] with questions. You will be required to provide proof of a flight or other transportation to the conference in order to receive your sponsored ticket.

Can I have a discount?

We offer discounts for early ticket purchases, organizing MLH Events, and through MLH Coaches. If you can't afford to attend due to ticket costs, MLH and GitHub are providing financial need based scholarships. Additionally, MLH Hackcon tickets are already heavily subsidized, for comparison, most professional conferences cost upwards of $500 and don't include housing or food.

I'm a speaker, do I still need to buy a ticket?

MLH Hackcon sells out quickly, so make sure you buy a ticket to secure your spot. If you are selected to speak and are eligible for a ticket reimbursement after having purchased one, we will notify you via e-mail.

I can't go anymore, can I have a refund?

We're sad you won't be able to join us! You can get a full refund for your ticket before June 1st. After that, we won't be able to refund you because we'll have already paid for everything. You can e-mail us at [email protected] to request to transfer your ticket to another person.

Is there a code of conduct?

We want to make sure that MLH Hackcon creates a safe and welcoming environment for attendees, speakers and sponsors. For this reason all participants are expected to follow the MLH Code of Conduct throughout the duration of the conference.

When should I arrive / depart?

Please note that the MLH Hackcon venue is approximately 1.5-2.5hrs from Manhattan. The conference will begin on Friday late afternoon. You should plan to take one of our scheduled shuttles to the event. Book your flights to arrive 2.5 hours before your preferred shuttle departure time to allow yourself to get to the shuttle pickup point near Penn Station in Manhattan via public transportation.
The conference will end Sunday afternoon at 3pm. Shuttles will make stops at EWR, LGA, and JFK directly from the venue. We recommend booking your flight to depart at 7:30pm or later to make sure you have ample time to check in.

How do I get to MLH Hackcon?

There are three airports near the venue: JFK, EWR, and LGA. You will be able to take inexpensive public transportation from each of these airports into Manhattan. We'll have shuttle buses going between Manhattan and the venue on Friday and Sunday. If you're driving, there will be parking at the venue. You are responsible for covering your own travel to the shuttle pickup point.

What should I bring to Hackcon?

Bring comfortable clothing for the camp environment. Portions of the event will be outdoors and in the evening, so pack accordingly, a light jacket is recommended. The camp has a lake so you may want to bring swimwear. Additionally, note taking materials will be helpful for sessions. Finally, remember you are representing your hackathon, so you may want to bring some stickers or other hackathon materials.

What will I eat at MLH Hackcon?

Meals, snacks, and drinks are included with your MLH Hackcon ticket. When you register, be sure to note any dietary restrictions on the order form.

Where will I stay during MLH Hackcon?

All MLH Hackcon tickets include housing for two nights (Friday and Saturday). You will be staying in gender identity separated communal housing. We purposefully assign rooms to help you meet organizers from other schools so that you leave MLH Hackcon with some great new friends. If you have special room requests, please e-mail us at [email protected] after purchasing your ticket.

I'm under 18, can I still attend?

Absolutely. Minors can attend if their parents will sign a liability waiver. Unfortunately, minors cannot stay overnight in the provided housing and will need to find their own accommodations. You may find a list of nearby hotels by clicking here to visit the venue’s website.

What is the drug and alcohol policy?

The venue has a strict "No Drugs" policy on the campus. Please do not bring your own. Tobacco smoking is allowed only in designated areas.
