The conference for hacker community leaders.

September 15th - 17th, 2017 | Birmingham, UK

What is MLH Hackcon?

MLH Hackcon is the official hackathon organizers' conference. It's an opportunity to meet the community, learn from one another, and to tackle the issues that we are facing together. With two full days of workshops, talks, and discussion sessions, new organizers can learn best practices for running a hackathon, and veteran organizers will share their experiences and help guide the next generation.

MLH Hackcon takes place twice per year: once in North America and once in Europe.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is included with a MLH Hackcon EU ticket?

Unlike most professional conferences, MLH Hackcon EU tickets are all-inclusive. Just get yourself to Birmingham and we'll take care of the rest! Tickets cover two nights of housing, six meals, snacks, drinks, swag, a fun group activity, and the conference itself.

Will you give out Scholarships?

Scholarships are provided by MLH and GitHub. Scholarships only cover conference tickets (which includes everything above) but do not cover travel or anything additional. To apply for a scholarship, e-mail [email protected] with a short video explaining why you want to go to MLH Hackcon EU and how much of a scholarship you need in order to attend. Please remember that we have a limited number of scholarship tickets, so only apply if this will make or break your ability to come to MLH Hackcon EU. We offer partial or full scholarships up to the full cost of the conference ticket. If your scholarship is approved, you will be required to provide proof of a flight or other transportation to the conference.

We received a GitHub New Member Event Grant. How do we claim our MLH Hackcon EU ticket?

We will be e-mailing every European Member Event that received a GitHub grant with information on how to redeem your ticket. Please note that each event will only receive one MLH Hackcon EU ticket courtesy of GitHub but you are welcome to purchase more for the rest of your team. If you have not received any information about your ticket, please e-mail us at [email protected] with questions. You will be required to provide proof of a flight or other transportation to the conference in order to receive your sponsored ticket.

When should I arrive / depart?

We will begin checkin at the Hostel at 4pm. Please plan to arrive by 5:30pm. The conference will end at 3pm, plan to have left by 3:30pm and book your travel to allow for adequate time to get from the venue to your point of departure.

Can I have a discount?

Unfortunately, MLH Hackcon EU tickets are already heavily subsidized and we cannot give any additional discounts. For comparison, most professional conferences cost upwards of £500 and don't include housing or food. If you can't afford to attend due to ticket costs, MLH and GitHub are providing financial need based scholarships.

I can't go anymore, can I have a refund?

We're sad you won't be able to join us! You can get a full refund for your ticket before July 1st. After that, we won't be able to refund you because we'll have already paid for everything. You can e-mail us at [email protected] to request to transfer your ticket to another person.

Is there a code of conduct?

We want to make sure that MLH Hackcon EU creates a safe and welcoming environment for attendees, speakers and sponsors. For this reason all participants are expected to follow the MLH Code of Conduct throughout the duration of the conference.

What will I eat at MLH Hackcon EU?

Meals, snacks, and drinks are included with your MLH Hackcon EU ticket. When you register, be sure to note any dietary restrictions on the order form.

How much does MLH Hackcon EU cost?

MLH Hackcon EU tickets are heavily subsidized for students. A standard ticket costs £125 for a student, recent grad, or non-student MLH Member Event organizers and £750 for an industry professional. We will make discounts available for early registrations. If you cannot afford it, you may apply for a scholarship.

How do I get to MLH Hackcon EU?

Birmingham New Street station is a ten minute walk from the venue. You can easily take rail lines to the event. If you plan to fly, Birmingham Airport (BHX) is just outside the city, from the airport, there are number of transit options including train to get to the venue.

Where will I stay during MLH Hackcon EU?

All MLH Hackcon EU tickets include housing for two nights (Friday and Saturday). You will be staying in gender identity separated communal housing. We purposefully assign rooms to help you meet organizers from other schools so that you leave MLH Hackcon EU with some great new friends. If you have special room requests, please e-mail us at [email protected] after purchasing your ticket.

I'm a speaker, do I still need to buy a ticket?

MLH Hackcon EU sells out quickly, so make sure you buy a ticket to secure your spot. If you are selected to speak and are eligible for a ticket reimbursement after having purchased one, we will notify you via e-mail.

I'm under 18, can I still attend?

Absolutely. Minors can attend if their parents will sign a liability waiver. Unfortunately, minors cannot stay overnight in the provided housing and will need to find their own accommodations. You may find a list of nearby hotels by clicking here.

What is the drug and alcohol policy?

The venue has a strict "No Drugs" policy on the campus. Alcohol will be made available to attendees over the age of 18. Please do not bring your own. Tobacco smoking is allowed only in designated areas.
